Apple: A weapon against Type 2 diabetes and Cancer
Apples- The best fruits one can eat because it is rich in pectin and antioxidants like quercetin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid.
Pectin is a water soluble fibre that helps reduce cholesterol and increase the process of digestion while the antioxidants help in decreasing the risk of chronic diseases inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, lower the level of cholesterol and help inhibiting type2 diabetes. [1]
Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes:
Antioxidants are molecules that help prevent cell damage caused by oxidants that helps prevent aging process and chronic diseases.
The antioxidants present in Apple are:
a) Quercetin: It is a strong antioxidant that benefits in heart health ; also helps the body to efficiently secrete insulin and prevents insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes occurs due to insulin resistance.[2]
b) Phloridzin: It normalises the glucose level in blood restoring insulin sensitivity in cells.
c) Chlorogenic acid: It helps in improving glucose tolerance and improves liver function in diabetic patients [3]
Prevention of Cancer:
Antioxidants protect the blood vessels and check the growth of reactive free radicals that increases the chance of cancer formation.According to a study, apples are one of the fruits that help reducing the chance of lung cancer.[4]
Apple also help prevents colon cancer according to the study conducted by French National Institute for Health and Medical Research, France. Procyanidins are the antioxidants that help in cancer cell death preventing colon cancer.
So guys, make it mandatory to have 1 Apple daily in your diet and also remember not to peel off the skin coz the skin of the apple contains six times more quercetin than its flesh.
